Anthropic, the AI firm backed by Amazon, has been ordered by a judge to address allegations that its expert witness cited a non-existent academic article in a $75 million copyright lawsuit. The disputed citation was intended to support claims that Anthropic’s AI model, Claude, rarely reproduces song lyrics. Plaintiffs have dismissed the reference as a "complete fabrication," suggesting it may have been generated by Claude itself.

The lawsuit adds to growing legal challenges for AI developers, with OpenAI, Meta, and Anthropic all facing allegations of training models on unlicensed copyrighted material. The case highlights the risks of AI-generated content in legal proceedings, where accuracy and authenticity are paramount.
